The Norfolk Town of Cromer: Lying on the northern coast of the county of Norfolk in East Anglia, the seaside town and parish of Cromer has for many years been a favoured holiday spot. Furthermore well known as a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, providing an essential income for its local fishermen over the decades.

The town nowadays has a population of around eight thousand residents and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: It is notable that the name "Cromer" was not identified in the 1086 Domesday Book, despite the fact that it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon encampments in the area, it is most likely that the village recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, because it was positioned where the parish church now lies. Yet another village identified in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today completely swallowed by the ocean, roughly four hundred metres from the pier.

Cromer itself at one time sat inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was gradually over time demolished by the sea during the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived over the years principally by the activity of its fishermen, an industry which flourished until the nineteen sixties at which time fish numbers diminished. As well as the celebrated Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet had been kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The regularly life-threatening conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, lead to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were usually operated by local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, which allowed lifeboats powered by motor to take over from previously man-powered craft.

The holiday industry started in Cromer in the early 1800s, and it was celebrated for its clean air and healthy bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was redesigned as a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system came to Cromer in 1877, driving more and more visitors to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. A second train station connecting it to the East Midlands was opened around a decade later.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church was first built in the 14th Cent, but was rebuilt in the 19th century and now has got the highest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
