In addition famous for being a fishing town, Cromer is world famous for its crabs and lobsters, which have been a major income source for the local fishermen throughout the years.

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Story of Cromer: The name "Cromer" wasn't noted in the Domesday Book (1086), even though it is not disputed that there were Saxon townships around the area, it is quite possible that the settlement listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, since it sat where the parish Church of St Peter and St Paul now lies. Another village noted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days entirely covered by the sea, about four hundred meters to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer long ago was situated some way from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was gradually eradicated by the ocean in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer took its place.

Cromer has managed over the decades by and large by the ability of its fishermen, a business which flourished up until the nineteen sixties at which time fish stocks decreased. Apart from lobster and the famous Cromer Crab, the town's fishing fleet were occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The routinely risky sea conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, triggered the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were typically crewed by local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling powered lifeboats to take over from man-powered craft.

The holiday business started out in Cromer early in the 19th century, and it was renowned for the pure air and restorative sea bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was changed into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line found its way to Cromer in the 1870s, bringing growing numbers of travellers to the town and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. An additional station to the East Midlands opened about 10 years later.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church originates from the 14th century, but was remodelled during the 19thC and now has the tallest church tower in the county (160 foot).
