A further village documented in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days totally swallowed by the sea, about 400m to the northeast of Cromer's pier.

Cromer itself originally was positioned some distance inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was eventually demolished by the ocean during the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has endured throughout the years for the most part by the competence of its fishermen, a business which flourished up until the nineteen sixties as fish stocks dropped. In addition to the lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town had been kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The typically risky conditions off Norfolk's coast, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were often manned by local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, permitting powered lifeboats to replace man-powered vessels.

The holiday industry began in the town early in the nineteenth century, and it was celebrated for the clean air and health enhancing bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later adapted into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line found its way to the town in eighteen seventy seven, driving lots more travellers to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. Another station to the East Midlands opened around 10 years after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul has its origin in the 14th C, although it was reconstructed during the 19thC and now has got the highest church tower in the county (160 feet).
