Cromer in Norfolk: Found on the northern coast of the county of Norfolk in East of England, the coastal town and parish of Cromer has for many years been a popular vacation spot. Furthermore well known for being a fishing town, Cromer is renowned for its lobsters and crabs, providing an important source of income for its local fishermen since early times.

Cromer presently has a population of about seven thousand seven hundred occupants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Story of Cromer: The name "Cromer" wasn't quoted in the Domesday Book of 1086, though it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon communes in the area, it is quite possible that the village recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, since it sat where the parish Church of Saint Peter and St Paul now stands. One additional settlement shown in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now completely swallowed by the ocean, around 400m north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself originally stood some distance inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was gradually over time eradicated by the ocean during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived across the decades predominantly by the prowess of its fishing fleet, an industry which flourished up until the 60's at which time fish numbers declined. In addition to the the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishing fleet were kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The routinely life-threatening sea conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, led to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were in most cases operated by the local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting lifeboats powered by motor to replace rowed craft.

The tourist business started out in the town in the first half of the nineteenth century, and the town was famed for the clean air and healthy sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was altered to a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line arrived in Cromer in the 1870s, delivering more and more travellers to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. An additional station to the East Midlands was opened approximately a decade after this.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church originates from the fourteenth century, although it was reconstructed in the 19thC and now has the highest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 feet).
