The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: The name "Cromer" was not recorded in the Domesday Book (1086), although there were certainly Anglo Saxon townships in the region, it is very likely that the village mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, as it was situated where the parish Church of Saint Peter and St Paul now lies. Another village documented in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been entirely covered by the sea, around four hundred meters north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself originally sat inland, but the former town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was little by little wiped out by the sea during the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer took its place.

Cromer has managed throughout the centuries mainly by the ability of its fishermen, a business that prospered up to the 1960's when fish stocks went into decline. As well as lobster and the famed Cromer Crab, the town's fishing fleet had been kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The generally risky sea conditions off the coast of Norfolk, lead to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were in most cases manned by Cromer's fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, which permitted lifeboats powered by motor to replace rowed craft.

Tourism started off in the town early in the nineteenth century, and the town was renowned for its pure air and beneficial bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was altered to a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived at Cromer in 1877, carrying more and more visitors to the area and establishing it as a vacation hotspot. A second station connecting it to the East Midlands opened up about a decade after this.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church has its origin in the 14th century, although it was reconstructed in the 19thC and now has the tallest church tower in the county (160 feet).
