The Norfolk Seaside Town of Cromer: Sitting on the north sea coast of the county of Norfolk in East Anglia, the coastal town and civil parish of Cromer has been a well loved vacation location since the 1800s. Likewise well known as a fishing town, Cromer is famed for its crabs and lobsters, that have been an essential income for its fishermen for many hundreds of years.

The town at this time has a populace of around seven thousand seven hundred inhabitants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer History: It is unusual that the name "Cromer" was not registered in the 1086 Domesday Book, despite the fact that there were certainly Anglo Saxon encampments in the region, it is feasible that the village listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, because it was located where the St Peter and Saint Paul parish church now lies. Another settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been entirely swallowed by the sea, about 400m from Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself at one time was positioned some distance inland, but the town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was little by little wiped out by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer replaced it.

The town has sustained financially through the generations largely by the activities of its fishing fleet, an industry that flourished up until the 60's as the numbers of fish went into decline. Besides lobster and the celebrated Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were being kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The commonly severe conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were usually operated by Cromer's fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, allowing lifeboats powered by motor to take over from previously rowed lifeboats.

The tourist industry started in the town in the early 19th century, and the town was renowned for its clean air and health giving bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later adapted into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway arrived in Cromer in the 1870s, carrying more and more tourists to the area and establishing it as a vacation hotspot. A 2nd train station to the East Midlands opened up about ten years later.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church has its origin in the 14th Cent, although was reconstructed during the 1800s and today boasts the highest church tower in the county (160 foot).
