Cromer Norfolk: Sitting on the north coastline of Norfolk county in East of England, the seaside resort and civil parish of Cromer has long been a favourite vacation spot. Likewise famous as being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, which have been a major income source for its local fishermen over the centuries.

Cromer today has a population of around eight thousand residents and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is odd that the name "Cromer" wasn't identified in the Domesday Book (1086), however there were certainly Anglo Saxon communes in the region, it is very likely that the community documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, as it stood where the parish Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul now stands. A second settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been totally covered by the sea, around 400m to the northeast of Cromer's pier.

Cromer at one time stood inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was gradually over time demolished by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived over the centuries for the most part by the skill of its fishermen, an industry that did well up to the 60's at which time fish numbers diminished. Besides the famed Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishermen had been engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The typically risky sea conditions off Norfolk's coast, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were predominately manned by Cromer's fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, permitting motor powered lifeboats to replace previously rowed boats.

Tourism commenced in the town in the early 19th century, and the town was celebrated for its pure air and restorative sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was adapted into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen seventy seven, drawing more and more visitors to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. An extra station to the East Midlands was unveiled approximately 10 years after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul has its origin in the 14th C, although it was remodelled during the Nineteenth century and now has got the highest church tower in the county (160 foot).
