The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Lying on the northern coast of the county of Norfolk in East of England, the coastal town and civil parish of Cromer has been a favorite vacation hotspot since the nineteenth century. Likewise known for being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, which have been an essential source of income for the fishermen since early days.

Cromer presently has a population of just under 8,000 inhabitants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer History: It is significant that the name "Cromer" wasn't quoted in the Domesday Book (1086), although there were certainly Anglo Saxon encampments in the area, it is most likely that the settlement registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, as it stood where the Saint Peter and St Paul parish church now stands. Yet another settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days entirely under the sea, roughly 400m north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself at one time stood inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was gradually over time wiped out by the sea during the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer took its place.

Cromer has sustained across the generations for the most part by the activities of its fishermen, an industry that did well up to the 1960's at which time fish stocks went into decline. As well as lobster and the famed Cromer Crab, the town's fishermen were being occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The frequently perilous sea conditions off Norfolk's coastline, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were routinely operated by the local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing motor powered lifeboats to replace man-powered boats.

The holiday business started in Cromer early in the nineteenth century, and the town was recognized for its pure air and restorative sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was later redesigned as a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line came to Cromer in 1877, bringing more and more travellers to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. Another station to the East Midlands opened approximately 10 years later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul originates from the 14th C, though it was rebuilt in the 19th century and now has got the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 foot).
