The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Lying on the north sea coast of Norfolk in East of England, the coastal resort and parish of Cromer has for many decades been a popular vacation spot. Also renowned as being a fishing town, Cromer is notable for its crabs and lobsters, which have been a significant source of income for the fishermen since early times.

The town these days has a population of approximately 7,700 residents and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is odd that the name "Cromer" was not documented in the Domesday Book (1086), despite the fact that there certainly would have been Saxon communes in the neighborhood, it is feasible that the community mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, because it stood where the St Peter and Saint Paul parish church now lies. Another village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been entirely under the sea, approximately four hundred metres to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself at one time was positioned some distance inland, but a town called Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was gradually over time demolished by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and finally Cromer took its place.

The town has managed through the decades largely through the activities of its fishing fleet, an industry that flourished up until the 60's when fish stocks went into decline. As well as lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town had been engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The oftentimes risky sea conditions off Norfolk's coastline, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were usually crewed by the local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing motor powered lifeboats to take over from man-powered craft.

The tourism business started off in Cromer in the early 19th century, and it was acknowledged for its pure air and beneficial bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was remodelled as a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The train arrived at the town in the 1870s, delivering an increasing number of tourists to the town and establishing it as a vacation destination. A second train station linking it to the East Midlands opened up approximately ten years later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul was first built in the 14th C, although it was rebuilt during the 19th century and today has got the highest church tower in the county (160 feet).
