Cromer Norfolk: Sitting on the north coast of Norfolk in East of England, the seaside town and civil parish of Cromer has for many decades been a favorite holiday destination. Equally famous for being a fishing town, Cromer is celebrated for its crabs and lobsters, which have been a vital income for the fishermen for many centuries.

The town at this time has a population of approximately 7,700 occupants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is peculiar that the name "Cromer" was not registered in the 1086 Domesday Book, although there certainly would have been Saxon townships in the region, it is plausible that the village recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, as it was located where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. A different village noted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been entirely covered by the sea, approximately four hundred meters to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer long ago was positioned some way from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was steadily demolished by the sea in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer took its place.

Cromer has survived through the generations by and large through the skill of its fishing fleet, a business which thrived up until the nineteen sixties when stocks of fish declined. As well as the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishermen were kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The quite often treacherous sea conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, triggered the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were often operated by local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, allowing lifeboats powered by motor to take over from man-powered boats.

The tourist business began in the town in the early 19th century, and the town was famous for the pure air and healthy bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line was connected to the town in the 1870s, driving more and more visitors to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. The second station to the East Midlands opened up around a decade later.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church was first built in the 14th century, although was remodelled in the 1800s and today has the tallest church tower in Norfolk (160 foot).
