The Norfolk Seaside Town of Cromer: Situated on the north sea coast of the county of Norfolk in Eastern England, the seaside town and civil parish of Cromer has been a celebrated vacation destination since the 19th century. Equally famous as a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, providing a major source of income for the local fishermen throughout the decades.

The town these days has a populace of about seven thousand seven hundred residents and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: It is odd that the name "Cromer" wasn't mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book, though there certainly would have been Anglo Saxon communites in the neighborhood, it is quite possible that the settlement registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, considering that it was situated where the Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church now lies. An additional village noted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days totally covered by the sea, about four hundred meters to the northeast of Cromer's pier.

Cromer once upon a time stood inland, but the town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was little by little wiped out by the sea in the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer took its place.

The town has sustained economically through the years mostly due to the prowess of its fishing fleet, an industry that thrived up until the nineteen sixties when the numbers of fish decreased. Apart from lobster and the famous Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The regularly severe conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were more often than not crewed by Cromer's fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling lifeboats powered by motor to take over from rowed vessels.

The tourist business developed in Cromer early in the nineteenth century, and it was acknowledged for its pure air and health giving sea bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was remodelled as a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The train came to the town in 1877, carrying an increasing number of tourists to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An additional train station joining it to the East Midlands opened up around a decade after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul originates from the 14th century, but was rebuilt in the 19thC and currently boasts the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 foot).
