The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Standing on the north coastline of Norfolk county in East Anglia, the coastal town and parish of Cromer has for many decades been a favorite holiday spot. Cromer these days has a populace of roughly eight thousand occupants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: It is significant that the name "Cromer" wasn't noted in the Domesday Book of 1086, even though it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon communes in the region, it is quite possible that the settlement recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, because it was located where the Saint Peter and St Paul parish church now stands. An additional settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been entirely covered by the sea, approximately four hundred meters to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself long ago was situated some way from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was progressively demolished by the ocean during the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer took its place.

Cromer has survived throughout the years mostly due to the activities of its fishermen, a business which prospered until the 1960's at which time the numbers of fish diminished. In addition to the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the town's fishing fleet were kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The often hazardous sea conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, triggered the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were almost entirely operated by Cromer's fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, enabling powered lifeboats to take over from rowed lifeboats.

The tourist business developed in Cromer in the first half of the 19th century, and it was acknowledged for its clean air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was adapted into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line found its way to the town in eighteen seventy seven, bringing an increasing quantity of people to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. The second train station connecting it to the East Midlands opened roughly a decade after this.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church was first built in the 14th Cent, but was remodelled in the 1800s and today has got the tallest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
