Cromer Norfolk: Lying on the northern coast of Norfolk in Eastern England, the coastal town and civil parish of Cromer has been a well loved holiday location since the 19th century. Likewise reputable for being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its crabs and lobsters, that have been a substantial source of income for the fishermen for many generations.

The town currently has a population of approximately eight thousand inhabitants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: The name "Cromer" wasn't mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086), even if it is clear that there were Anglo Saxon communites in the region, it is certainly likely that the settlement registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, considering that it sat where the parish church now stands. One additional settlement recognized in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been completely under the sea, roughly four hundred meters north-east of the pier.

Cromer at one time was positioned inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was slowly but surely demolished by the ocean during the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer took its place.

The town has managed over the decades mostly due to the ability of its fishermen, an industry which prospered up until the 1960's at which time the numbers of fish went into decline. Besides lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The typically life-threatening conditions off the coast of Norfolk, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were almost entirely manned by the local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing lifeboats powered by motor to take over from man-powered lifeboats.

Tourism developed in Cromer in the first half of the nineteenth century, and the town was famous for the pure air and health enhancing bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was later redesigned as a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen seventy seven, carrying an ever-increasing number of tourists to the town and establishing it as a vacation destination. An additional station to the East Midlands opened approximately 10 years after this.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church originally dates from the fourteenth century, although was remodelled in the 19thC and today has the tallest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 foot).
