Cromer Norfolk: Located on the northern coastline of the county of Norfolk in East Anglia, the coastal resort and civil parish of Cromer has for many generations been a favourite holiday spot. Also recognized as being a fishing town, Cromer is notable for its lobsters and crabs, providing a vital income source for its local fishermen throughout the centuries.

The town at present has a populace of around seven thousand seven hundred residents and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historical Past: It is notable that the name "Cromer" was not registered in the Domesday Book of 1086, even if it is undeniable that there were Saxon encampments in the region, it is possible that the community mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, given it sat where the parish church now stands. One additional settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now completely swallowed by the sea, approximately 400 meters from the pier.

Cromer originally stood from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was gradually over time demolished by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has endured over the decades for the most part due to the activities of its fishermen, a business which did well up to the 60's at which time the numbers of fish declined. Besides lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the local fishing fleet had been engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The frequently hazardous sea conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were frequently manned by the local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling lifeboats powered by motor to take over from previously rowed lifeboats.

The tourism business started in Cromer in the early 19th century, and the town was renowned for its clean air and health giving bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was remodelled as a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line was connected to Cromer in 1877, bringing increasing amounts of travellers to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. A second station linking it to the East Midlands was unveiled around a decade later.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul was first built in the fourteenth century, though it was rebuilt during the Nineteenth century and today has the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 feet).
