Cromer Norfolk: Found on the north coast of Norfolk in East Anglia, the seaside town and parish of Cromer has been a well loved holiday location since the 19th century. Equally famous as being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, providing a leading income source for its fishermen for many hundreds of years.

Cromer at this time has a population of about seven thousand seven hundred occupants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: It is odd that the name "Cromer" was not identified in the Domesday Book (1086), however it is certain that there were Anglo Saxon encampments in the neighborhood, it is most likely that the village documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, because it was situated where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. A different village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today completely covered by the sea, about four hundred meters from Cromer's pier.

Cromer itself at one time was positioned some way from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was over time demolished by the sea in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer took its place.

The town has survived through the centuries mainly by the ability of its fishermen, an industry that prospered up until the 60's at which time fish stocks went into decline. In addition to lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the local fishing fleet were being kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The normally treacherous conditions off Norfolk's coast, triggered the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were most commonly operated by the local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, making it possible for powered lifeboats to take over from previously rowed boats.

The tourism business started out in the town in the first half of the nineteenth century, and the town was famous for its pure air and healthy bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later redesigned as a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway came to Cromer in 1877, bringing lots more tourists to the town and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. Another railway station to the East Midlands was opened about a decade later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul was first built in the 14th Cent, though it was remodelled during the Nineteenth century and now boasts the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 feet).
