The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer History: The name "Cromer" was not noted in the Domesday Book of 1086, even if it is evident that there were Saxon townships in the region, it is feasible that the settlement listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, as it sat where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. One additional village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been totally swallowed by the sea, about four hundred meters from Cromer's pier.

Cromer itself originally stood some distance inland, but the town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was gradually eradicated by the sea in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer took its place.

Cromer has sustained through the decades by and large due to the expertise of its fishermen, a business that flourished until the 60's as fish numbers went into decline. Aside from lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet were occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The oftentimes dangerous conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were mostly operated by the local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting powered lifeboats to replace previously man-powered lifeboats.

Tourism started off in Cromer in the early 1800s, and the town was famous for the clean air and healthy sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was later turned into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system was connected to the town in the 1870s, driving growing amounts of tourists to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. Another rail station connecting it to the East Midlands was opened around 10 years later.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church has its origin in the fourteenth century, though it was reconstructed during the 19th century and currently boasts the tallest church tower in the county (at 160 feet).
