Cromer Norfolk: Standing on the northern coastline of Norfolk in East of England, the seaside resort and parish of Cromer has been a well loved vacation spot ever since the 1800s. Likewise renowned as a fishing town, Cromer is famed for its lobsters and crabs, that have been a leading source of income for the fishermen for many centuries.

Cromer presently has a population of around eight thousand residents and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer History: It is odd that the name "Cromer" was not recognized in the Domesday Book (1086), even if there certainly would have been Saxon settlements in the area, it is probable that the village identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, as it was situated where the parish church now stands. Another village outlined in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days entirely swallowed by the sea, approximately 400m north-east of Cromer's pier.

Cromer itself once upon a time was positioned some way inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was gradually over time wiped out by the ocean in the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer replaced it.

The town has sustained financially across the ages mostly due to the activity of its fishing fleet, an industry which thrived up until the 1960's as stocks of fish went into decline. In addition to the the famed Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet were being kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The typically treacherous conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were mainly manned by local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting powered lifeboats to take over from previously rowed boats.

Tourism commenced in the town early in the nineteenth century, and it was acknowledged for the clean air and health giving bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was later turned into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway was connected to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, carrying an increasing amount of people to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. An alternate railway station to the East Midlands opened up about 10 years after this.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church was first built in the 14th century, but was remodelled during the 1800s and presently has got the highest church tower in Norfolk (160 foot).
