The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Sitting on the north coastline of the county of Norfolk in East of England, the seaside resort and parish of Cromer has been a favorite holiday hotspot ever since the 1800s. Additionally famous as a fishing town, Cromer is known for its crabs and lobsters, providing a substantial income source for the local fishermen since early days.

Cromer at this time has a population of just below eight thousand occupants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Story of Cromer: It is strange that the name "Cromer" wasn't documented in the 1086 Domesday Book, though there were certainly Anglo Saxon encampments in the neighborhood, it is quite possible that the settlement registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, since it stood where the Saint Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. Yet another village recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been totally covered by the sea, around four hundred meters from Cromer's pier.

Cromer once upon a time was situated inland, but a town called Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was progressively eradicated by the ocean in the Middle Ages and finally Cromer replaced it.

The town has managed through the centuries primarily by the activity of its fishing fleet, a business that did well until the 1960's at which time fish stocks went into decline. As well as the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishing fleet had been kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The commonly life-threatening sea conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, led to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were in most cases crewed by Cromer's fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling lifeboats powered by motor to take over from previously rowed boats.

Tourism commenced in Cromer in the first half of the 1800s, and the town was famed for its clean air and health giving sea bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later adapted into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway came to the town in 1877, carrying more and more travellers to the town and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. An extra rail station joining it to the East Midlands opened around 10 years after this.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church originates from the 14th century, and it was rebuilt in the 1800s and presently has got the highest church tower in Norfolk (160 foot).
