The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: The name "Cromer" wasn't quoted in the Domesday Book (1086), though there were certainly Saxon townships in the region, it is feasible that the village noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, given it was positioned where the parish Church of Saint Peter and St Paul now stands. One additional village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been completely under the sea, approximately 400m north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself long ago stood some way inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was gradually over time eradicated by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived over the decades predominantly by the activities of its fishermen, an industry which thrived up until the 1960's at which time fish numbers dropped. Apart from lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the local fishing fleet had been kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The generally severe sea conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, triggered the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were regularly crewed by local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing lifeboats powered by motor to replace rowed vessels.

Tourism developed in Cromer in the early 19th century, and the town was acknowledged for the clean air and healthy bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was later turned into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line arrived in Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, carrying lots more visitors to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. A second train station connecting it to the East Midlands opened roughly a decade later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul originates from the 14th C, but was remodelled during the Nineteenth century and today has the highest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
