Cromer in Norfolk: Standing on the northern coastline of Norfolk county in East Anglia, the coastal resort and parish of Cromer has for many decades been a popular holiday spot. Equally respected as a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, that have been a vital income for the local fishermen since early times.

Cromer at this time has a population of just below 8,000 residents and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Story of Cromer: It is odd that the name "Cromer" was not recognized in the 1086 Domesday Book, even if it is indisputable that there were Anglo Saxon communites around the area, it is probable that the settlement noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, since it was situated where the parish church now lies. A further settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been totally swallowed by the sea, around 400m from Cromer's pier.

Cromer long ago was positioned some distance inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was gradually eradicated by the sea in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived economically through the generations largely through the skill of its fishing fleet, a business that thrived until the nineteen sixties at which time the numbers of fish went into decline. Aside from the famed Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet had been kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The often risky sea conditions off Norfolk's coast, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were normally crewed by Cromer's fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting lifeboats powered by motor to take over from previously man-powered craft.

The tourist industry started out in Cromer early in the 1800s, and it was recognized for its pure air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was adapted into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The train came to the town in the 1870s, driving increasing numbers of people to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. A 2nd rail station to the East Midlands was opened roughly 10 years after this.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul was first built in the fourteenth century, though it was rebuilt during the 19th century and today has got the tallest church tower in the county (at 160 foot).
