Cromer Norfolk: Standing on the northern coast of Norfolk county in Eastern England, the seaside town and parish of Cromer has long been a favourite vacation spot. Also recognized as a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, providing an important source of income for its fishermen through the ages.

Cromer presently has a populace of around 8,000 residents and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: It is significant that the name "Cromer" wasn't registered in the 1086 Domesday Book, despite the fact that it is certain that there were Saxon townships in the region, it is conceivable that the settlement registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, since it was situated where the Saint Peter and St Paul parish church now stands. One additional village noted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been entirely swallowed by the ocean, approximately 400 meters north-east of the pier.

Cromer originally sat inland, but the town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was gradually over time destroyed by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and finally Cromer took its place.

The town has survived financially across the decades by and large due to the skill of its fishermen, a business which flourished until the nineteen sixties when stocks of fish went into decline. In addition to the the famous Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the town's fishing fleet were kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The quite often risky conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, led to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were largely manned by Cromer's fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, making it possible for lifeboats powered by motor to replace rowed vessels.

Tourism started in Cromer in the early nineteenth century, and the town was famous for the pure air and beneficial bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was turned into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway found its way to the town in 1877, carrying more and more tourists to the town and establishing it as a holiday destination. A second train station joining it to the East Midlands opened up about a decade later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul has its origin in the 14th century, but was remodelled during the 19th century and now boasts the tallest church tower in the county (160 foot).
