Cromer itself long ago stood from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was steadily wiped out by the ocean during the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer took its place.

Cromer has sustained through the decades principally due to the expertise of its fishermen, a business which did well until the 1960's when fish stocks dropped. Aside from lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The generally unsafe conditions off Norfolk's coast, triggered the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were most commonly crewed by the local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, which allowed powered lifeboats to replace previously rowed vessels.

Tourism started out in Cromer in the first half of the 19th century, and it was famous for the pure air and health giving sea bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was later transformed into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived in Cromer in 1877, carrying more and more people to the area and establishing it as a holiday hotspot. Another station to the East Midlands was unveiled approximately ten years after this.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church originally dates from the 14th C, but was reconstructed in the 19th century and now boasts the highest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 feet).
