The Norfolk Town of Cromer: Situated on the northern coastline of the county of Norfolk in East of England, the coastal town and civil parish of Cromer has for many decades been a favorite vacation destination. Furthermore well known as being a fishing town, Cromer is famed for its crabs and lobsters, which have been an essential income source for the fishermen for many generations.

The town these days has a population of around seven thousand seven hundred occupants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Story of Cromer: It is strange that the name "Cromer" wasn't mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, however there were certainly Saxon townships in the region, it is possible that the settlement noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, given it was situated where the parish Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul now stands. A second settlement registered in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today entirely swallowed by the sea, approximately 400m to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer itself long ago was situated some distance inland, but the town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was slowly destroyed by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has managed economically over the centuries predominantly due to the competence of its fishermen, a business that thrived up to the 60's at which time stocks of fish went into decline. In addition to the the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishermen had been occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The all too often treacherous sea conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, triggered the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were mainly manned by the local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, enabling powered lifeboats to take over from previously rowed lifeboats.

Tourism started in Cromer early in the 1800s, and the town was famed for its clean air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was redesigned as a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The train came to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, carrying lots more visitors to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. Another station to the East Midlands was opened around 10 years after this.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul originally dates from the fourteenth century, although was remodelled in the Nineteenth century and now has the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 foot).
