The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Located on the north sea coast of Norfolk county in East of England, the coastal town and parish of Cromer has for many decades been a favourite holiday spot. Furthermore recognized as being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, that have been an important income source for its fishermen since early times.

Cromer currently has a population of just under eight thousand residents and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: The name "Cromer" was not listed in the 1086 Domesday Book, even though it is not disputed that there were Saxon settlements in the region, it is possible that the settlement identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, since it was placed where the St Peter and Saint Paul parish church now stands. Yet another village noted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today entirely under the sea, approximately 400m from the pier.

Cromer itself long ago stood some distance from the coast, but the former town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was little by little demolished by the ocean during the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has managed financially through the years mostly by the prowess of its fishing fleet, a business that did well up to the 1960's when fish numbers declined. Aside from the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishing fleet were engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The often perilous conditions off Norfolk's coastline, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were commonly manned by the local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, making it possible for lifeboats powered by motor to take over from man-powered lifeboats.

Tourism commenced in the town in the first half of the 19th century, and it was recognized for the clean air and beneficial bathing conditions. First constructed in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was adapted into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The train arrived in the town in 1877, carrying lots more visitors to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. An alternate railway station connecting it to the East Midlands opened up about 10 years later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul has its origin in the 14th C, but was reconstructed during the 19th century and now has got the tallest church tower in Norfolk (160 foot).
