Cromer in Norfolk: Set on the northern coastline of Norfolk in Eastern England, the coastal town and civil parish of Cromer has been a well loved vacation destination ever since the 1800s. Additionally recognized for being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, providing a leading income source for its local fishermen since early days.

The town at this time has a population of approximately 8,000 occupants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historical Past: The name "Cromer" wasn't listed in the Domesday Book (1086), despite the fact that there were certainly Anglo Saxon settlements in the neighborhood, it is certainly likely that the village noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, considering that it sat where the parish Church of St Peter and St Paul now stands. A different village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been totally under the sea, about 400m to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer long ago was situated some distance inland, but the former town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was little by little wiped out by the eroding effect of the sea during the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived across the years principally by the activity of its fishing fleet, a business that thrived until the nineteen sixties at which time the numbers of fish went into decline. Besides the famous Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet were kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The commonly hazardous conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were most often manned by the local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting motor powered lifeboats to take over from previously rowed vessels.

Tourism started off in Cromer in the first half of the 19th century, and it was celebrated for the clean air and health giving bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line found its way to Cromer in 1877, driving an ever-increasing amount of tourists to the town and establishing it as a vacation hotspot. An additional railway station linking it to the East Midlands opened up approximately 10 years later.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church first dates from the 14th Cent, although was remodelled in the 1800s and at this time has got the highest church tower in the county (at 160 foot).
