The Norfolk Town of Cromer: Discovered on the north coastline of the county of Norfolk in East of England, the seaside resort and civil parish of Cromer has been a well loved holiday hotspot since the 1800s. Likewise respected as being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, that have been a substantial income for its fishermen through the centuries.

The town today has a populace of just below 8,000 residents and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historical Past: The name "Cromer" was not recognized in the 1086 Domesday Book, though it is undisputed that there were Saxon settlements in the area, it is certainly likely that the settlement recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, given it sat where the Saint Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. Another village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today totally under the sea, about four hundred meters to the northeast of Cromer's pier.

Cromer itself once upon a time stood from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was slowly but surely demolished by the sea during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived throughout the centuries by and large due to the activities of its fishing fleet, an industry that did well up until the 60's as stocks of fish diminished. Apart from lobster and the celebrated Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet were being engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The commonly perilous sea conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, triggered the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were for the most part crewed by the local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting motor powered lifeboats to replace man-powered boats.

The tourist industry began in Cromer in the first half of the 19th century, and the town was famed for the pure air and restorative sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was turned into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system came to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, drawing more and more tourists to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. A second station linking it to the East Midlands opened up around a decade after this.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church has its origin in the fourteenth century, but was reconstructed during the 19th century and today boasts the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 foot).
