The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Sitting on the north sea coast of Norfolk in Eastern England, the seaside town and parish of Cromer has been a favorite holiday location ever since the 19th century. Equally famous as a fishing town, Cromer is known for its crabs and lobsters, that have been a vital income source for the fishermen for many generations.

Cromer these days has a populace of just under eight thousand occupants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer History: It is peculiar that the name "Cromer" was not quoted in the 1086 Domesday Book, although it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon communites in the area, it is probable that the community recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, given it was positioned where the Saint Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. One additional village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days entirely swallowed by the ocean, around 400m from Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself at one time sat inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was slowly but surely demolished by the eroding effect of the sea during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer took its place.

The town has endured throughout the decades predominantly by the activities of its fishermen, an industry that flourished up until the 60's at which time fish stocks went into decline. In addition to the lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the town's fishing fleet were engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The oftentimes treacherous sea conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, contributed to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were routinely crewed by Cromer's fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, making it possible for motor powered lifeboats to replace man-powered lifeboats.

Tourism began in Cromer in the first half of the 1800s, and it was renowned for its clean air and restorative bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system was connected to Cromer in 1877, carrying lots more travellers to the town and establishing it as a vacation destination. Another station to the East Midlands opened roughly ten years later.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul was first built in the 14th century, although it was reconstructed during the Nineteenth century and today has got the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 foot).
