Cromer Norfolk: Found on the north coastline of the county of Norfolk in East Anglia, the coastal resort and civil parish of Cromer has been a well loved holiday hotspot since the 1800s. Equally respected for being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its crabs and lobsters, providing a major income source for the fishermen for many generations.

Cromer today has a populace of just below eight thousand residents and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: It is significant that the name "Cromer" wasn't identified in the Domesday Book (1086), though it is not disputed that there were Saxon settlements in the region, it is most likely that the settlement documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, because it sat where the Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church now lies. One additional settlement posted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days entirely under the sea, approximately 400m to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer originally was positioned from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was little by little destroyed by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer replaced it.

The town has managed economically through the centuries mostly through the skill of its fishing fleet, a business which flourished up to the nineteen sixties as fish numbers declined. In addition to lobster and the celebrated Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet were engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The often severe sea conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were largely manned by local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, allowing lifeboats powered by motor to take over from man-powered boats.

The holiday business started out in Cromer in the early 19th century, and the town was acknowledged for its pure air and health enhancing sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was adapted into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system was connected to the town in eighteen seventy seven, bringing more and more tourists to the town and establishing it as a vacation hotspot. Another train station to the East Midlands opened about 10 years after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul originally dates from the 14th C, though it was reconstructed during the 19th century and presently has got the tallest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 feet).
