The Norfolk Town of Cromer: Sitting on the north coastline of Norfolk in Eastern England, the seaside town and civil parish of Cromer has long been a favoured vacation spot. Additionally well known as being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its crabs and lobsters, that have been a major source of income for the fishermen since early days.

The town at present has a population of about eight thousand inhabitants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: It is notable that the name "Cromer" was not documented in the Domesday Book of 1086, even though it is certain that there were Anglo Saxon communites around the area, it is quite possible that the community recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, as it stood where the parish Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul now stands. A further settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today entirely covered by the sea, roughly 400m from the pier.

Cromer itself long ago sat from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was little by little destroyed by the sea in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has managed economically across the generations by and large due to the talent of its fishing fleet, a business which did well up to the nineteen sixties at which time fish stocks dropped. In addition to the lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet were being engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The all too often life-threatening sea conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were regularly manned by Cromer's fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, permitting motor powered lifeboats to take over from previously rowed boats.

The tourism industry began in the town in the early 19th century, and it was celebrated for the clean air and health improving sea bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was turned into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway was connected to Cromer in 1877, driving more and more visitors to the town and establishing it as a holiday destination. An additional station joining it to the East Midlands opened up roughly a decade after this.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church originates from the fourteenth century, though it was remodelled during the 19thC and now has the highest church tower in the county (160 feet).
