The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Standing on the northern coast of the county of Norfolk in East of England, the coastal resort and parish of Cromer has been a favourite holiday destination since the 19th century. In addition well known for being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its crabs and lobsters, which have been a substantial source of income for its fishermen since early days.

The town today has a population of about seven thousand seven hundred occupants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is significant that the name "Cromer" was not mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book, even if it is indisputable that there were Saxon communites in the area, it is very likely that the village noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, because it was situated where the parish church now stands. Another village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days completely covered by the sea, approximately 400 metres north-east of the pier.

Cromer once upon a time was positioned some way from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was eventually eradicated by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and finally Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived economically across the centuries by and large due to the talent of its fishermen, a business which prospered up to the nineteen sixties at which time the numbers of fish declined. Aside from the renowned Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the town's fishermen were being kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The generally perilous sea conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were almost entirely crewed by the local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, enabling lifeboats powered by motor to take over from rowed vessels.

The tourism business started out in the town early in the 19th century, and it was recognized for the pure air and health giving sea bathing conditions. First constructed in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was later redesigned as a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The train came to the town in 1877, driving increasing numbers of travellers to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. An additional rail station linking it to the East Midlands opened up about a decade after this.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church was first built in the 14th Cent, and it was reconstructed in the 1800s and now boasts the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 foot).
