The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Story of Cromer: The name "Cromer" wasn't registered in the Domesday Book of 1086, even if there were certainly Saxon encampments around the area, it is certainly likely that the community registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, given it sat where the parish Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul now stands. A second village recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been totally under the sea, approximately four hundred metres to the northeast of Cromer's pier.

Cromer originally stood some distance from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was gradually eradicated by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer took its place.

The town has endured economically across the years for the most part due to the talent of its fishermen, a business that prospered up until the 1960's at which time stocks of fish declined. Besides lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the local fishermen had been engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The typically dangerous conditions off Norfolk's coastline, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were typically operated by Cromer's fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, which permitted motor powered lifeboats to take over from man-powered vessels.

Tourism started in the town early in the nineteenth century, and it was famed for its pure air and health enhancing bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was remodelled as a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived in the town in 1877, bringing increasing amounts of people to the area and establishing it as a holiday hotspot. A 2nd railway station linking it to the East Midlands was unveiled approximately a decade later.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church originates from the 14th C, although was reconstructed in the 19thC and presently has got the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 feet).
