Cromer Norfolk: Set on the northern coast of the county of Norfolk in Eastern England, the coastal resort and civil parish of Cromer has been a favourite holiday destination ever since the nineteenth century. The town currently has a populace of just below 8,000 residents and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: It is notable that the name "Cromer" wasn't listed in the Domesday Book of 1086, however it is accepted that there were Anglo Saxon townships in the area, it is likely that the settlement identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, as it sat where the parish church now lies. A further settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now entirely swallowed by the sea, around 400 metres to the northeast of Cromer's pier.

Cromer itself once upon a time was situated some distance inland, but the former town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was little by little eradicated by the sea in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer took its place.

The town has survived economically across the centuries predominantly through the expertise of its fishermen, a business that did well until the 60's as fish numbers decreased. Aside from the renowned Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet were engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The frequently life-threatening conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, led to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were often operated by Cromer's fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing powered lifeboats to replace previously man-powered lifeboats.

The tourism business began in the town in the first half of the 19th century, and it was recognized for its pure air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was later transformed into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The train arrived in Cromer in the 1870s, carrying lots more people to the town and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. The second station connecting it to the East Midlands opened up roughly ten years after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul has its origin in the fourteenth century, and it was reconstructed during the Nineteenth century and at this time has got the highest church tower in the county (at 160 foot).
