Cromer in Norfolk: Lying on the northern coastline of Norfolk county in East Anglia, the seaside resort and parish of Cromer has for many generations been a popular vacation spot. Equally respected for being a fishing town, Cromer is famed for its crabs and lobsters, that have been a leading income source for its local fishermen since early days.

Cromer at this time has a population of just under 8,000 residents and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Story of Cromer: It is significant that the name "Cromer" was not identified in the Domesday Book (1086), nonetheless it is likely that there were Saxon townships in the region, it is quite possible that the community registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, because it was situated where the parish Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul now lies. A second settlement identified in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been totally covered by the sea, around 400m from Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself originally was situated some distance inland, but the former town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was over time destroyed by the sea during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer took its place.

The town has survived economically through the ages mostly through the competence of its fishing fleet, an industry which flourished until the nineteen sixties at which time fish stocks decreased. As well as the famed Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet were kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The normally treacherous sea conditions off the coast of Norfolk, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were oftentimes operated by local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, making it possible for powered lifeboats to take over from man-powered vessels.

Tourism started in Cromer early in the 1800s, and it was recognized for the pure air and restorative sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was adapted into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived in the town in eighteen seventy seven, drawing lots more tourists to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. A 2nd station connecting it to the East Midlands was unveiled roughly 10 years after this.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul first dates from the 14th Cent, though it was reconstructed in the Nineteenth century and today boasts the tallest church tower in Norfolk (160 foot).
