The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The History of Cromer: The name "Cromer" wasn't noted in the Domesday Book (1086), even if there certainly would have been Anglo Saxon encampments around the area, it is certainly likely that the village recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, considering that it was positioned where the parish church now lies. An additional village detailed in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days completely swallowed by the ocean, about four hundred metres to the northeast of Cromer's pier.

Cromer at one time sat some way inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was slowly eradicated by the sea during the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has managed economically across the decades for the most part through the skill of its fishing fleet, an industry which did well up until the nineteen sixties as fish numbers decreased. In addition to the renowned Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the town's fishing fleet had been engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The commonly treacherous conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, contributed to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were predominantly operated by local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing motor powered lifeboats to replace rowed craft.

Tourism developed in Cromer in the early nineteenth century, and the town was renowned for its clean air and health enhancing sea bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was adapted into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The train came to the town in the 1870s, drawing more and more visitors to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. Another station to the East Midlands was unveiled around a decade later.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church has its origin in the 14th century, and it was remodelled in the Nineteenth century and now has got the tallest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 foot).
