The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Story of Cromer: The name "Cromer" was not quoted in the 1086 Domesday Book, although there were certainly Anglo Saxon settlements in the area, it is feasible that the community identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, given it was situated where the Saint Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. A different village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been completely under the sea, approximately 400 meters from the pier.

Cromer itself originally sat inland, but a town called Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was slowly demolished by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer took its place.

Cromer has endured financially throughout the years primarily by the activities of its fishermen, a business which flourished up to the 60's as the numbers of fish went into decline. As well as lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town had been kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The commonly unsafe conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, led to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were essentially crewed by Cromer's fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, making it possible for lifeboats powered by motor to replace rowed vessels.

The tourist industry started in Cromer early in the 1800s, and the town was famous for its clean air and restorative sea bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was later transformed into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen seventy seven, delivering lots more tourists to the town and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. An extra station linking it to the East Midlands was unveiled approximately 10 years after this.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul has its origin in the fourteenth century, though it was rebuilt during the 1800s and now boasts the tallest church tower in the county (at 160 foot).
