Cromer Norfolk: Set on the north coastline of the county of Norfolk in East of England, the seaside resort and civil parish of Cromer has been a favorite vacation destination ever since the 1800s. Equally reputable as being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, which have been a significant income source for its fishermen over the years.

The town today has a population of around seven thousand seven hundred inhabitants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: It is notable that the name "Cromer" wasn't recognized in the 1086 Domesday Book, though it is not disputed that there were Saxon encampments in the region, it is certainly likely that the village recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, as it sat where the Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church now lies. A different settlement registered in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days entirely covered by the sea, approximately 400 metres from Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself originally stood from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was little by little destroyed by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer took its place.

The town has survived over the generations mainly due to the expertise of its fishermen, a business that did well until the nineteen sixties at which time fish numbers went into decline. Aside from the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet were kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The regularly dangerous sea conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were almost entirely manned by local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, which permitted motor powered lifeboats to take over from man-powered craft.

The holiday industry started off in Cromer in the early 19th century, and the town was acknowledged for the pure air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was later adapted into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived at Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, drawing more and more visitors to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. A 2nd train station to the East Midlands was unveiled around a decade later.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church first dates from the 14th century, although was rebuilt during the 1800s and now has the highest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
