Cromer Norfolk: Situated on the north sea coast of the county of Norfolk in East of England, the seaside town and civil parish of Cromer has been a popular holiday hotspot since the 1800s. Additionally renowned as being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, providing a significant source of income for its local fishermen for many generations.

Cromer these days has a populace of just under 8,000 inhabitants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The History of Cromer: It is significant that the name "Cromer" wasn't recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, even if there certainly would have been Saxon communes in the neighborhood, it is plausible that the village recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, since it stood where the parish Church of St Peter and Saint Paul now stands. One additional village identified in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now entirely covered by the sea, around 400m north-east of the pier.

Cromer itself originally stood some way inland, but a town called Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was progressively destroyed by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer took its place.

Cromer has survived across the years principally through the activity of its fishermen, a business that flourished up to the nineteen sixties when the numbers of fish went into decline. In addition to the the famous Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet had been engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The oftentimes perilous sea conditions off Norfolk's coastline, contributed to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were routinely crewed by the local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, making it possible for lifeboats powered by motor to take over from man-powered vessels.

The tourism industry started in the town in the first half of the 19th century, and it was celebrated for the pure air and healthy sea bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was redesigned as a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen seventy seven, bringing an ever-increasing number of people to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. An additional railway station joining it to the East Midlands was unveiled approximately 10 years later.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church originates from the 14th century, and it was rebuilt in the 19th century and now boasts the highest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 foot).
