The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: It is peculiar that the name "Cromer" wasn't registered in the Domesday Book (1086), although it is not disputed that there were Saxon settlements in the region, it is possible that the village noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, given it stood where the parish church now lies. A different settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been entirely covered by the sea, about 400 metres to the northeast of Cromer's pier.

Cromer originally stood some way inland, but the town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was eventually demolished by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer took its place.

The town has endured economically over the years principally due to the skill of its fishermen, a business which prospered up until the nineteen sixties when stocks of fish declined. Besides the renowned Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishermen had been kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The commonly unsafe sea conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were for the most part operated by local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, allowing powered lifeboats to replace previously man-powered vessels.

Tourism started off in Cromer early in the nineteenth century, and it was recognized for the clean air and restorative bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was transformed into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system found its way to the town in the 1870s, bringing a growing quantity of people to the area and establishing it as a holiday destination. Another station to the East Midlands opened up approximately ten years after this.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church has its origin in the 14th Cent, although was rebuilt in the 19th century and today has the tallest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 feet).
