The town at present has a populace of just under eight thousand inhabitants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historic Past: The name "Cromer" wasn't quoted in the Domesday Book of 1086, despite the fact that it is accepted that there were Anglo Saxon encampments in the neighborhood, it is most likely that the community recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, because it stood where the parish Church of St Peter and St Paul now lies. A different village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days completely covered by the sea, approximately 400m to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself at one time sat some distance inland, but the town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was gradually over time demolished by the eroding effect of the sea during the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived throughout the generations mainly due to the competence of its fishermen, a business that thrived up until the 1960's as fish stocks declined. Apart from lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet were engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The frequently risky conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, contributed to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were usually manned by Cromer's fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, enabling lifeboats powered by motor to take over from previously rowed boats.

Tourism started off in the town in the early 1800s, and the town was acknowledged for the clean air and health giving bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later remodelled as a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line found its way to the town in the 1870s, carrying an ever-increasing quantity of people to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. A 2nd station to the East Midlands was opened about 10 years later.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church was first built in the 14th C, but was reconstructed in the 19th century and at the moment has got the highest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 feet).
