The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Lying on the north sea coast of Norfolk in East Anglia, the seaside town and civil parish of Cromer has for many generations been a fashionable holiday destination. Equally respected for being a fishing town, Cromer is famed for its crabs and lobsters, that have been an important source of income for the local fishermen since early days.

Cromer presently has a populace of about 8,000 residents and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historical Past: It is odd that the name "Cromer" wasn't recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book, however there certainly would have been Anglo Saxon communes in the region, it is likely that the village registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, since it stood where the parish church now lies. A second settlement recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been completely swallowed by the ocean, about 400m from the pier.

Cromer originally stood some distance from the coast, but the former town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was gradually eradicated by the eroding effect of the sea during the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer took its place.

The town has endured throughout the decades largely through the activity of its fishing fleet, an industry that prospered up until the nineteen sixties when fish numbers went into decline. In addition to the lobster and the famous Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were being engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The oftentimes severe conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, triggered the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were mostly operated by local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, which permitted lifeboats powered by motor to replace previously rowed craft.

The tourism business commenced in Cromer early in the 19th century, and the town was celebrated for the clean air and healthy sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later transformed into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The train found its way to the town in the 1870s, carrying increasing numbers of visitors to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An additional rail station to the East Midlands opened up roughly ten years after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul first dates from the 14th Cent, although it was remodelled in the 19thC and today has the tallest church tower in the county (at 160 feet).
