The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The History of Cromer: The name "Cromer" was not documented in the Domesday Book (1086), although there were certainly Saxon settlements in the region, it is plausible that the community noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, because it sat where the parish church now stands. Yet another settlement posted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been totally swallowed by the sea, about four hundred meters from Cromer's pier.

Cromer at one time sat some way inland, but a town called Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was gradually over time eradicated by the sea during the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer replaced it.

The town has managed financially across the centuries mainly due to the skill of its fishermen, a business that thrived up until the 60's when the numbers of fish diminished. As well as lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the town's fishermen were being kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The routinely hazardous conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, triggered the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were usually operated by Cromer's fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, enabling powered lifeboats to take over from previously rowed craft.

Tourism developed in the town early in the nineteenth century, and it was renowned for its pure air and health giving sea bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived in Cromer in the 1870s, carrying lots more tourists to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. An extra railway station to the East Midlands opened up about a decade later.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church was first built in the 14th Cent, although it was rebuilt in the 19th century and now boasts the highest church tower in the county (160 feet).
