The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is unusual that the name "Cromer" wasn't listed in the Domesday Book (1086), even if it is not disputed that there were Saxon communes in the area, it is plausible that the village mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, because it sat where the parish Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul now stands. Another settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been totally under the sea, approximately 400m from the pier.

Cromer itself once upon a time sat some way from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was little by little destroyed by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has sustained through the centuries primarily by the ability of its fishermen, a business that thrived until the nineteen sixties at which time the numbers of fish went into decline. Aside from the famed Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet were kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The typically risky conditions off Norfolk's coast, led to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were usually operated by local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, permitting motor powered lifeboats to replace previously rowed craft.

Tourism started in Cromer in the early 1800s, and it was famed for its clean air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was adapted into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The train arrived at Cromer in 1877, drawing more and more visitors to the area and establishing it as a holiday hotspot. A 2nd station to the East Midlands opened up about 10 years later.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church originates from the 14th Cent, although it was remodelled during the 19thC and at this time boasts the tallest church tower in Norfolk (160 foot).
