Cromer Norfolk: Set on the north coastline of Norfolk in East of England, the coastal resort and civil parish of Cromer has for many years been a favourite vacation destination. Equally known as being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its crabs and lobsters, that have been a major income for its local fishermen through the generations.

Cromer today has a populace of just under eight thousand occupants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is odd that the name "Cromer" wasn't noted in the Domesday Book of 1086, though it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon communes in the area, it is possible that the village listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, because it sat where the parish Church of St Peter and St Paul now lies. A further village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now completely under the sea, roughly four hundred meters from Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself once upon a time stood some distance from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was gradually over time eradicated by the ocean in the Middle Ages and finally Cromer took its place.

The town has endured throughout the ages predominantly by the expertise of its fishermen, a business that prospered up until the nineteen sixties when the numbers of fish diminished. Aside from lobster and the famous Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The regularly life-threatening conditions off Norfolk's coastline, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were most often operated by Cromer's fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting lifeboats powered by motor to replace rowed lifeboats.

The holiday business started in the town in the first half of the nineteenth century, and it was famous for the clean air and restorative sea bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was altered to a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line arrived in Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, driving an ever-increasing number of people to the town and establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An additional station linking it to the East Midlands opened approximately 10 years after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul was first built in the 14th Cent, but was rebuilt in the 19th century and today boasts the highest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 foot).
