The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Situated on the north coast of the county of Norfolk in Eastern England, the seaside resort and civil parish of Cromer has been a well known vacation hotspot ever since the nineteenth century. Likewise recognized as a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, providing a significant source of income for its local fishermen throughout the generations.

The town these days has a population of just below 8,000 occupants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: It is strange that the name "Cromer" was not recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, even though it is clear that there were Saxon encampments in the neighborhood, it is feasible that the settlement noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, considering that it sat where the parish Church of Saint Peter and St Paul now lies. Yet another village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days completely covered by the sea, about four hundred meters to the northeast of Cromer's pier.

Cromer originally stood inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was slowly but surely eradicated by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has managed economically over the decades largely due to the talent of its fishing fleet, a business which did well up to the nineteen sixties when fish stocks went into decline. As well as the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the town's fishermen were being kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The frequently hazardous conditions off the coast of Norfolk, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were regularly operated by the local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, allowing motor powered lifeboats to take over from rowed craft.

The holiday business started out in Cromer in the early 19th century, and the town was acknowledged for its pure air and health enhancing bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was later changed into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line came to the town in the 1870s, bringing more and more people to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. A 2nd rail station linking it to the East Midlands opened roughly a decade later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul originates from the 14th C, but was reconstructed in the 19th century and now boasts the tallest church tower in the county (at 160 feet).
