The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is significant that the name "Cromer" was not mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book, however it is not disputed that there were Saxon communes around the area, it is very likely that the community identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, since it stood where the Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church now lies. A second settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been entirely covered by the sea, approximately four hundred metres to the northeast of Cromer's pier.

Cromer originally sat some distance inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was progressively eradicated by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer replaced it.

The town has managed throughout the years primarily through the expertise of its fishing fleet, an industry which prospered until the 60's at which time fish numbers went into decline. In addition to the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the town's fishing fleet had been engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The commonly unsafe sea conditions off the coast of Norfolk, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were mostly manned by local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, enabling lifeboats powered by motor to replace rowed vessels.

Tourism started off in the town in the first half of the 19th century, and the town was recognized for the clean air and beneficial bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was transformed into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen seventy seven, driving a growing number of travellers to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. Another station to the East Midlands was opened about a decade later.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul originates from the 14th Cent, but was rebuilt in the 19th century and at the moment has got the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 foot).
