Cromer Norfolk: Set on the northern coast of the county of Norfolk in Eastern England, the seaside town and parish of Cromer has been a celebrated holiday location ever since the 19th century. Also known for being a fishing town, Cromer is celebrated for its lobsters and crabs, providing a substantial income for the local fishermen through the decades.

Cromer at present has a populace of approximately seven thousand seven hundred occupants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Story of Cromer: The name "Cromer" wasn't recorded in the Domesday Book (1086), despite the fact that it is undeniable that there were Anglo Saxon communes in the region, it is probable that the village documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, since it was situated where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. Yet another village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been totally swallowed by the sea, approximately four hundred metres from the pier.

Cromer once upon a time stood some way inland, but the former town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was progressively eradicated by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer took its place.

Cromer has sustained financially through the generations mostly by the activity of its fishermen, an industry that thrived up until the 1960's when the numbers of fish diminished. Apart from lobster and the famous Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town had been kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The commonly risky sea conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were by and large operated by Cromer's fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, which allowed powered lifeboats to replace man-powered boats.

The holiday industry started in Cromer early in the 19th century, and it was renowned for its clean air and restorative bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was later remodelled as a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen seventy seven, drawing lots more visitors to the area and establishing it as a vacation hotspot. An additional train station joining it to the East Midlands was unveiled roughly 10 years after this.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church originally dates from the fourteenth century, but was rebuilt in the 19th century and now has the highest church tower in the county (at 160 feet).
