The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: It is peculiar that the name "Cromer" was not recognized in the 1086 Domesday Book, despite the fact that there certainly would have been Saxon settlements in the area, it is feasible that the village noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, because it stood where the parish church now stands. Another village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now entirely covered by the sea, approximately four hundred metres to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer itself originally stood inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was eventually eradicated by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has sustained economically throughout the decades for the most part through the expertise of its fishing fleet, an industry which flourished until the 1960's as stocks of fish declined. Aside from lobster and the famous Cromer Crab, the local fishing fleet were kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The regularly hazardous conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were typically crewed by local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, permitting lifeboats powered by motor to replace rowed boats.

The holiday industry started in the town in the first half of the 1800s, and the town was recognized for its pure air and restorative bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was transformed into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The train arrived in Cromer in 1877, driving more and more people to the town and establishing it as a vacation destination. An additional station connecting it to the East Midlands opened approximately a decade later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul was first built in the 14th C, and it was reconstructed in the 1800s and now has got the highest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
