Cromer Norfolk: Found on the northern coastline of Norfolk county in East Anglia, the coastal resort and civil parish of Cromer has been a well known holiday spot ever since the nineteenth century. Additionally reputable for being a fishing town, Cromer is notable for its crabs and lobsters, which have been a major income for the fishermen for many generations.

The town currently has a populace of just under 8,000 occupants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Story of Cromer: It is unusual that the name "Cromer" wasn't quoted in the Domesday Book (1086), although it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon communites in the neighborhood, it is certainly likely that the village mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, given it was positioned where the Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church now lies. A second settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been completely swallowed by the ocean, about four hundred metres north-east of Cromer's pier.

Cromer itself once upon a time was situated some way from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was eventually destroyed by the sea during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived economically across the ages largely due to the talent of its fishermen, a business that prospered up until the 60's at which time stocks of fish went into decline. Besides lobster and the celebrated Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet had been occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The often risky conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, triggered the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were regularly crewed by the local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting lifeboats powered by motor to take over from rowed boats.

Tourism started out in Cromer early in the nineteenth century, and the town was celebrated for the clean air and health improving bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was later adapted into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line found its way to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, delivering more and more people to the area and establishing it as a vacation hotspot. A second station joining it to the East Midlands opened approximately a decade later.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church first dates from the fourteenth century, although was reconstructed during the 19th century and today boasts the tallest church tower in the county (at 160 foot).
