The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The History of Cromer: It is odd that the name "Cromer" wasn't quoted in the Domesday Book (1086), nonetheless there were certainly Saxon settlements in the area, it is certainly likely that the community mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, because it stood where the parish Church of St Peter and St Paul now lies. A further settlement posted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been entirely covered by the sea, approximately four hundred meters to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer at one time sat some way inland, but the town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was gradually over time eradicated by the ocean in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer took its place.

Cromer has survived economically through the centuries mainly by the activities of its fishermen, a business which flourished until the nineteen sixties when the numbers of fish went into decline. Aside from lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet had been engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The oftentimes life-threatening sea conditions off the coast of Norfolk, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were essentially manned by Cromer's fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling lifeboats powered by motor to replace previously rowed lifeboats.

The tourism business began in the town early in the 19th century, and the town was celebrated for the pure air and health giving bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was altered to a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line came to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, bringing lots more visitors to the area and establishing it as a holiday destination. An alternate railway station connecting it to the East Midlands was unveiled around ten years after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul was first built in the fourteenth century, and it was reconstructed in the 19th century and now boasts the tallest church tower in the county (at 160 foot).
