Cromer Norfolk: Situated on the northern coastline of the county of Norfolk in East of England, the seaside resort and civil parish of Cromer has been a celebrated vacation destination since the 19th century. Additionally well known for being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, providing a major source of income for the fishermen throughout the decades.

Cromer today has a populace of just below eight thousand inhabitants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historic Past: The name "Cromer" wasn't noted in the Domesday Book (1086), even if there certainly would have been Anglo Saxon communes in the neighborhood, it is most likely that the village identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, given it was positioned where the parish Church of St Peter and Saint Paul now stands. A further village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been entirely swallowed by the ocean, approximately 400m to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself originally was positioned some way inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was gradually over time demolished by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer took its place.

The town has sustained financially over the centuries primarily through the activity of its fishing fleet, a business that did well up to the 60's as stocks of fish diminished. Besides lobster and the famous Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet were being engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The commonly life-threatening conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were typically operated by the local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing lifeboats powered by motor to take over from previously man-powered lifeboats.

The tourist business began in Cromer in the first half of the 19th century, and it was famous for its clean air and health giving sea bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later transformed into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway was connected to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, driving an ever-increasing quantity of travellers to the town and establishing it as a vacation hotspot. Another station to the East Midlands opened up around 10 years later.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church has its origin in the 14th century, although was rebuilt during the 19th century and now has got the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 feet).
